NFRC Approves New Strategic Plan Elements, Other Business At New Member Meeting

Silver Spring, Md. – April 18, 2005 – The National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) presented to the membership at its spring member meeting a new vision statement, mission statement, core values, and goals that were approved by its Board of Directors after a lengthy strategic planning process. The Board also began the process at the meeting of approving more detailed objectives and plans to complete its new strategic plan, including approving a full set of more detailed objectives, in the next few months.

The new plan will provide direction to NFRC staff and leadership for the next three to five years and represents the combined effort of the NFRC Board, staff, and membership. The plan was developed using a process that encouraged review and participation by all interested parties.

“As NFRC grows in terms of both membership and products/services offered, now is the right time to establish a thoughtful forward-looking document to lead us through the organization's next chapter. It was also important to everyone working on this plan that it be open, inclusive, and reflect different voices within the industry,” said Jim Benney, NFRC executive director.

NFRC's new strategic plan includes:

•  A new Vision Statement : “NFRC is the recognized global leader in delivering energy and related performance ratings and certification for fenestration products and systems.”

•  A new Mission Statement : “NFRC develops and administers comparative energy and related rating programs that serve the public and satisfy the needs of its private sector partners by NFRC providing fair, accurate and credible, user-friendly information on fenestration product performance.”

•  Core Values that stress NFRC's commitment to the public interest, using a consensus driven process to craft a balanced approach to the work, recognizing and respecting the creative tension that comes from diverse input, protecting and preserving the integrity of the NFRC brand, and stressing an inclusive attitude in serving all segments of the fenestration marketplace.

Approved overall Goals include:

•  To strengthen the organization's ability to achieve its mission

•  To continually evaluate and improve the existing NFRC programs

•  To build new programs as needed

•  To maintain a long-term global focus

During the meetings, NFRC also:

•  Approved new disclaimer language to be included on all labels. The new language added to the label reads, “NFRC does not recommend any product and does not warrant the suitability of any product for any specific use.” This language is intended to recognize that while NFRC ratings provide certain energy performance values for products based on NFRC procedures, and does not endorse or recommend specific products.

•  Continued progress toward completing a window attachment (window film) rating.

•  Approved NFRC 302-2004: Verification Program for Optical Spectral Data and authorized publication following document formatting and legal counsel review.
